A $51.1-million loss resulting primarily from the sale of a coal subsidiary to Arch Mineral Corp. principally caused Dallas-based Diamond Shamrock Corp.’s larger first-quarter loss, compared to the same period last year, a spokesman said. Net income from continuing operations, which is principally exploration and production, was $1.5 million, compared to $5.9 million in the year-ago quarter.
