St. Louis-based General Dynamics bucked the defense industry trend of lower profit in the first quarter by posting a 50% increase in earnings. The company reported it made $105.4 million on sales of $2.45 billion, up from $70.1 million on sales of $1.64 billion last year. The turnaround was credited to its Cessna general aviation unit, which posted a $2.9-million profit in the quarter.
