An 80-year-old woman was found dead with a plastic bag over her face and her husband was found unconscious next to her in a North Park apartment Thursday.
San Diego police and firefighters were summoned to the 3500 block of Park Boulevard after a neighbor and an apartment manager found the couple, Sgt. Chuck Sleeper said.
Deputy Coroner Robert Engel said Cecile Tenney was found dead. Lying next to Tenney was her husband, Joseph, 76.
Sleeper said a plastic bag also was found over his face, but he was still breathing. He was taken to Mercy Hospital, where his condition was critical.
San Diego homicide detectives said Thursday they believe the man, apparently despondent over the failing health of his wife, may have suffocated her and then tried to kill himself.
Police said an investigation is continuing.
