The World : Soviets OK Linnas Review

A Soviet court will review the war crimes conviction of Karl Linnas, deported by the United States this week, and examine new evidence before deciding whether to execute him, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said. Linnas, 67, convicted in absentia on charges of mass murder and sentenced to death by a Soviet court in 1962, has the right of appeal, the spokesman said. Linnas, a retired land surveyor, was stripped of his U.S. citizenship before his deportation. The Soviets say Linnas commanded a World War II German concentration camp in Estonia and supervised the killing of 12,000 men, women and children.
