Coach Rick Pitino of Providence College, who denied that he is assured of becoming the New York Knicks’ new coach, met Thursday in Phoenix with General Manager Jerry Colangelo of the Suns.
Pitino, who led the Friars to the NCAA semifinals last month, acknowledged that he had discussed the coaching position with the Knicks. But he refused comment on a report in the Providence Journal-Bulletin that the reported five-year Knick deal could be worth $3.2 million.
“Everybody says I’m not serious about Phoenix,” Pitino said. “But this is not just a token visit. I hit it off with Jerry Colangelo. If he says to me, you’re the guy for the job, I’m going to consider it.”
