Last week, the Granite Hills High School baseball team scored 88 runs in seven games to win the Lions tournament and take over the No. 1 ranking in San Diego County.
But as Granite Hills Coach Gordon Thompson said Thursday, “It’s a lot easier to get to the top than it is to stay there.”
So far, the Eagles are doing a good job of hanging on to their ranking. Granite Hills beat El Capitan, 12-5, Thursday for its second straight victory since moving into the No. 1 spot.
The Eagles (6-1, 14-3) scored seven runs in the second inning, highlighted by Brian Giles’ two-run single, to beat the Vaqueros (5-2, 10-8) in a battle for first place in the Grossmont League at Granite Hills.
Donnie Carroll and Jon Rice combined on an 11-hitter and Shawn O’Coyne helped lead Granite Hills’ 12-hit attack with two doubles and two RBIs.
In other Grossmont League games:
Grossmont 9, Helix 8--Doug Davis’ RBI single with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning capped a seven-run rally for Grossmont (4-3, 12-5) over Helix (4-3, 7-8). Davis started Grossmont’s winning rally with a one-out double. Rick Haar, Joe Appolito and Paul Appenzeller all hit homers for Helix, which led, 8-2, going to the bottom of the seventh.
Mount Miguel 9, El Cajon 0--Rick Ayala had three hits including a home run and J.J. Ludlow also hit a homer to lead Mount Miguel at El Cajon. Randy Genochio pitched a six-hitter for the Matadors.
