Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Inc., Orlando, Fla., posted a first-quarter loss of $27.6 million, compared to a loss of $7.4 million a year ago. The latest loss includes a pretax charge of $15.2 million for relocation of the company’s insurance operations to Orlando. It also includes results of operations of Holt, Rinhart & Winston and W. B. Saunders, which were acquired in December. Harcourt said these operations are typical of its other educational publishing operations, which normally incur losses in the first quarter.
