Defense Plans Challenge in Achille Lauro Cases

GENOA, Italy — Defense lawyers today will try to overturn the convictions of 11 Palestinians in the 1985 Achille Lauro hijacking on grounds that the presiding judge was not authorized to hear the case.
On July 10, 1986, the Assize Court, presided over by Judge Lino Monteverde, sentenced three defendants to life in prison and eight to terms ranging from six months to 30 years. Four defendants were acquitted.
Defense attorney Marisa Lolli said she will argue at today’s appeals trial that the presidential decree appointing Monteverde as presiding judge was issued only last Oct. 4, almost three months after the trial.
