The judge of “The People’s Court” took the witness stand Tuesday when he testified in support of an Assembly bill to allow California’s small-claims courts to handle cases involving up to $3,500. Retired Superior Court Judge Joseph Wapner told the Assembly Judiciary Committee in Sacramento that the current $1,500 ceiling is too low. Wapner said financial limits for small-claims courts lag behind the economy and must be increased to match inflation.
