Nicaragua will boycott the 1988 Summer Olympic Games if they are held only in South Korea, the president of the nation’s Olympic Committee said in an interview published Wednesday.
Commander Moises Hassan said that the Sandinista government supports North Korea’s position, and insists the Games be held in both countries.
Hassan, in the interview published by the pro-government El Nuevo Diario, said Nicaragua also favors that opening ceremonies be held simultaneously in Pyongyang, the North Korean capital, and Seoul, the capital of South Korea.
The International Olympic Committee has selected South Korea as the site of the Games. But the precise share, if any, of the events to be held in North Korea remains to be decided.
