The World : Fiji Coup Leader Wins Out

Ethnic Fijian leaders approved a settlement under which Lt. Col. Sitiveni Rabuka, a Fijian who led a coup last week that toppled an Indian-dominated government, will emerge as the nation’s strongman. The Great Council of Chiefs, which speaks for the indigenous Fijian community that has dominated the government since the Pacific island nation gained independence from Britain in 1970, ratified an agreement designed to ease the country’s political crisis. Governor General Penaia Ganilau said in a broadcast that he had dissolved Parliament and declared the prime minister’s office vacant. He is expected to name a Council of Advisers headed by Rabuka.
