Kathmandu, Blondie and Pyewacket head a fleet of eight large ultralight displacement boats for the silver anniversary California Cup race to be held on Santa Monica Bay today through Sunday.
This will be a windward-leeward buoy event--the nautical equivalent of drag racers competing on an oval track--but the format proved practical in the last two all-sled Cal Cups, won by Kathmandu in ’85 and Blondie in ’86.
If the wind allows, there will be two races today and Saturday, and a fifth on Sunday. Racing is scheduled to start each day at noon.
