Turnbull, Head of Testing Service, Dies

LAWRENCE, N.J. — William W. Turnbull, president of Educational Testing Service from 1970 to 1981, has died, ETS announced Friday. He was 67.
Turnbull, the second president of the organization that administers the Scholastic Aptitude Test and other college entrance and placement examinations, died Thursday at Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia.
Turnbull was credited with guiding ETS through its transition from simply a student testing organization to one that also provides research on a wide range of educational issues. His own most recent studies, done in his post-retirement position as scholar in residence at ETS, focused on the issues of quality in education and of equality in access to schools, colleges and employment.
