Two boats shared the lead after Friday’s opening day of the California Yacht Club’s 25th California Cup Regatta on Santa Monica Bay.
For the third straight year, competitors in the Cal Cup are racing in 66- to 70-foot ultra-light displacement maxi-boats with 16- to 20-member crews.
Leaders at 4.75 points after the first two of five races are Dick Pennington’s Peterson-Cheetah, Long Beach Yacht Club, and Bill Wilson’s Santa Cruz-70 Citius, Los Angeles Yacht Club. Cheetah won the first race going away, and Citius led the second from start to finish.
Two races are scheduled for today, and the final race will be Sunday.
