Southern Section Tennis : Briggs, Pham and Ivey Advance With Opening-Round Victories

Three Orange County high school tennis players advanced to the second round of the Southern Section individual tennis championships in opening-round matches Saturday at Edison.
Top-seeded Michael Briggs of Corona del Mar defeated Carl Nygren of Whittier, 6-1, 6-2, and Brian Tom of Whitney, 6-0, 6-1.
William Pham of Los Amigos defeated Akida Mashaka of Gahr, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, and David Ramirez of La Serna, 6-2, 6-4.
Unseeded Randy Ivey of Woodbridge beat Robert Shendrikar of Whitney, 6-0, 6-1; Kit Codik of Los Alamitos, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, and Larry Casas of Marina, 6-3, 6-3.
Willie Quest of Long Beach Poly, who beat Dax Peterson of Mater Dei, 6-3, 6-0, and Peter Pham of Los Amigos, 6-2, 6-3, also advanced.
Matches will continue Friday at 1 p.m. at Edison. The semifinals and finals will be played Saturday at the Balboa Bay Club beginning at 10:30 a.m.
