Attorneys for Wayne Newton have asked a federal judge in Las Vegas to deny a motion to overturn a jury’s record $19.2-million libel award against NBC. The network’s attorneys earlier this year asked U.S. District Judge Myron Crocker to schedule a new trial or issue his own verdict acquitting NBC. After hearing two months of testimony, a federal jury on Dec. 18 decided that NBC libeled Newton in a series of four broadcasts in 1980 and 1981 that linked him to organized crime figures.
