Australian motorcycle ace Wayne Gardner took the lead on the second lap and was never challenged in winning the Italian 500 cc Grand Prix at Monza, Italy.
Defending world champion Eddie Lawson of the United States finished almost 20 seconds behind Gardner’s clocking of 44 minutes 4.81 seconds and average speed of 118.043 m.p.h. Frenchman Christian Sarron was third in 44.37.27.
