A former director of Nobel Kemi, Sweden’s biggest ammunition arms maker, and an alleged accomplice were charged with masterminding the smuggling of explosives to Iran and other Middle East nations. Public prosecutor Stig Age told a news conference that Mats Lundberg, former marketing director with the explosives firm, and Karl-Erik Schmitz, a Swedish businessman, have been charged on 42 smuggling counts. The charges were the first in a three-year investigation into Nobel Kemi and its sister company, Bofors. Peace groups have accused the firms of selling arms worth millions of dollars in contravention of Sweden’s strict export laws.
