About 30 water-skiers were expected to start at 8 a.m. this morning in the first New Year’s Day Polar Bear race from Long Beach to Santa Catalina Island and back.
The event is not associated with the traditional August race. Entry fee is $1. The race will start and finish near the Queen Mary.
