Cypress Buys Control Data Chip Plant : Cypress Semiconductor added another type of computer chip to its line by purchasing a Minnesota plant for $14.7 million from Control Data Corp. Cypress, a San Jose-based company that has 1,400 employees worldwide and other plants in California and Texas, now will be manufacturing eight types of chips, the basic building block material for computers. The newly acquired VTC Class-1 semiconductor wafer fabrication facility in Bloomington, Minn., was sold by Control Data because it was losing money on the operation.
