Back Spasms Force Trevino Out of Tourney

CARLSBAD, Calif. — Muscle spasms in the back forced Lee Trevino to withdraw from second-round play today in the Tournament of Champions, the kickoff event on the PGA Tour.
Trevino, who won seven senior tournaments and led all of golf in money winnings with $1,190,518 in 1990, told tournament officials he was unable to compete after attempting to warm up for second-round play.
Trevino was third, two strokes out of the lead after a first-round 71 in the senior action of the tournament that brings together only the winners of tour titles from 1990.
Trevino said he suffered a slight muscle pull in the lower back “about 10 days ago.”
The injury, he said, is not serious and is not related to the back surgery he underwent more than a decade ago.
“I’ll be out 10 days,” he said.
