The Irvine High School wrestling team defeated flu-weakened El Modena, 43-18, in a nonleague meet Tuesday at El Modena.
“This was a good test for us,” Irvine Coach John Phillips said. “It helps to get us ready for South Coast League meets.”
Irvine (10-0), is the county’s No. 2 ranked wrestling team. El Modena (6-2) entered the meet ranked fourth.
“We wrestled well in spots, but we were missing five starters (who have the flu). John was solid all the way through,” El Modena Coach Alan Clinton said.
El Modena’s ranked wrestlers, Danny Wells (No. 1 in the county at 119 pounds), Danny Santana (No. 1 at 145), and Erik Jacobs (No. 3 at 171) won their classes.
Wells decisioned Don Gunter (No. 2), 8-3; Santana decisioned Jim Reynolds, 16-4, and Jacobs pinned Eddie Cottone in 50 seconds, the fastest pin of the night.
Irvine’s other two ranked wrestlers, both at No. 2, recorded pins to win their classes. Dominic Bulone (130) pinned Ty Wynn in 1:38 and Elliot Morelan pinned Juan Alvarez in 2:17.
