Star Power: James Stewart, Lauren Bacall and Tom Cruise have won the American Cinema Awards for distinguished achievement in film. Singer Whitney Houston received the award for musical performer of the year. The American Cinema Foundation’s gala Saturday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel drew more than 2,000 to the $2,500-a-plate benefit for the Motion Picture and Television Country House and Hospital. Some 200 stars from film’s more golden age attended, including presenters Frank Sinatra, Gregory Peck, Kirk Douglas and Maureen O’Hara. The special Gloria Swanson Humanitarian Award was given to Leo Jaffe, former chairman of Columbia Pictures.
