World IN BRIEF : BANGLADESH : At Least 50 Hurt in Student-Police Clash

Police in Dhaka, Bangladesh, fired tear gas and used batons to disperse a mob of about 500 rampaging college students angered by the beating of a colleague by police, officials said. At least 40 students and 10 police officers were treated for injuries sustained in the two-hour riot, officials said. Meanwhile, the government announced thousands of prisoners will be released and other sentences will be reduced as part of a plan to end two weeks of prison unrest.
