Three UCLA Football Reserves Transfer

UCLA quarterback Bert Emanuel and tight end Bobby Gray have transferred to Rice University in Houston, and linebacker Pat McPherson has enrolled at Santa Clara.

Emanuel, a redshirt freshman, had minimal playing time last season. He was listed as third string behind Tommy Maddox and Jim Bonds.

Emanuel, a football and track star at Langham Creek High in Houston, and Gray, from Arlington, Tex., enrolled at Rice a week ago Monday, according to a university spokesman.

An option-type quarterback, Emanuel reportedly transferred because he didn’t believe that he would get much playing time at UCLA.

As a redshirt freshman last season, Maddox was the Pacific 10 Conference’s total offense leader, averaging 257.3 yards. He was also the league’s second-ranked passer.

Emanuel, 5 feet 10 and 168 pounds, was a sprinter on UCLA’s track team last year. His best 100-meter time was 10.75 seconds, and he was a member of the 400-meter relay team.

Gray, 6-4 and 225, didn’t play as a freshman last season. He was a football and basketball standout at Arlington High School.

Emanuel and Gray must sit out a year before they are eligible to play. McPherson, a junior, who played on UCLA’s special teams, will be eligible to play at Santa Clara next season because he is transferring to a Division I-AA school.
