Suzy Favor held off a challenge from Shelly Steely on Saturday night to win the women’s 1,500 meters at the Oregon Indoor track and field meet at Portland, but she narrowly missed earning a $5,000 bonus.
Favor, the only woman to win four NCAA 1,500-meter championships outdoors, won in a hand-timed 4 minutes 12.4 seconds. She would have won a $5,000 bonus if she had finished under 4:12. Steele was second in 4:14.1.
Frank O’Mara of Ireland suffered a similar fate in the men’s mile, winning in 4:00.30 when a time under four minutes would have been worth $5,000.
