Cal State Northridge, the nation’s fourth-ranked men’s volleyball team, relaxed a bit Saturday night, emptying its bench and playing 12 players in a 15-10, 14-16, 15-8, 15-11 nonconference win over UC San Diego in San Diego.
The Matadors (3-1) were led by Coley Kyman, who notched 27 kills and recorded a .454 hitting percentage. Teammate Ken Lynch added 13 kills and had a .492 hitting percentage.
As a team, Northridge hit .410.
Sherdrick Bonner, who guided the school’s football team to the NCAA Division II playoffs last fall as the Matadors’ quarterback, made his debut as a volleyball player for Northridge, seeing action in the fourth game. Bonner has been playing volleyball for just one month.
Northridge next will travel to Hawaii for a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match against Hawaii. The Rainbows are ranked ninth nationally.
