San Diego State blew a 25-20 halftime lead and wasted strong efforts by Kieishsha Garnes and Carmelia Bloodsaw in a 77-71 loss to host Texas El Paso, and fell to 9-7, 2-1 in the Western Athletic Conference. Garnes had 26 points and 12 rebounds, and Bloodsaw had 31 points and made eight of 16 shots from three-point range. Holly Russ had 35 points and 12 rebounds for UTEP.
Point Loma Nazarene improved to 3-0 in the Golden State Athletic Conference, 12-6 overall, with a 67-56 victory over Fresno Pacific in Fresno. Alicia Harasty led the Crusaders with a career-high 15 points and seven rebounds. Becky Wilson added 12 and Christy Stevens 11. Fresno Pacific fell to 2-1, 6-9.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Tim Rapp had 30 points to lead UCSD over Menlo college, 83-66. The Tritons improved to 13-3 while Menlo slipped to 11-5.
Point Loma Nazarene couldn’t hold onto a six-point halftime lead and lost to host Fresno Pacific, 72-63, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game. PLNC, which led, 30-24, at halftime, committed 10 of its 18 turnovers in the second half. James Kinzler scored 16 points and Mark Bulgin added 12 for PLNC (9-11, 1-2). Gary Litten led PLNC with seven rebounds.
Fresno Pacific (11-8, 3-1) was led by Scot Patterson with 21 points.
Christian Heritage suffered its sixth consecutive loss, 67-46, to The Masters in front of their third largest crowd (1,050) in school history. The Mustangs (6-12) jumped out to a 14-0 lead as the Hawks (4-14) had 10 turnovers in the first 8:51. Vernaldo Butler led Christian Heritage with a season-low 12 points.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
UC San Diego lost to visiting Cal State Northridge, 15-10, 14-16, 15-8, 15-11. Lamson Lamb has 24 kills for UCSD (0-2) and Brent Couture had 12 kills. Coley Kyman had 27 kills for CS Northridge (3-1).
