GTE-Contel Merger Is Approved: The merger of GTE Corp. and Contel Corp. has been approved by the U.S. Department of Justice and 11 of 18 state regulatory agencies, the telephone companies said. The merger was announced last July and was overwhelmingly approved by shareholders of both companies in December.
