Italians Volunteer to Replace POW Flier

ROME — Many Italians have called Parliament to offer themselves as hostages in Iraq in place of a captured Italian airman, officials said Wednesday.
“Obviously, the offers can’t be taken into consideration,” said Raffaele Costa, chairman of the Defense Committee of the Chamber of Deputies. “But it shows the state of emotions after the Italian prisoner was shown on television.”
Capt. Maurizio Cocciolone, a navigator on a Tornado fighter-bomber, was one of a group of allied airmen paraded on Iraqi TV. The airmen criticized the attack on Iraq.
