NHL ROUNDUP : Whalers Hand Flames Another Loss on Road

Just a few weeks ago, the Calgary Flames were an imposing team.

They were leading the tough Smythe Division and were being tabbed as the team to beat for the Stanley Cup.

Then, the Flames hit the road. They have run into trouble, fallen out of first place and may fall even lower.

Paul Cyr scored twice, including the game-winner, Wednesday night at Hartford, Conn., to lead the Whalers to a 5-4 victory over the Flames.

It was the fifth loss in a row on the road for Calgary, which is 1-5-0 in the last six games.

The Whalers, who won their fourth in a row at home, built a 3-0 lead in the first 41 minutes.

Suddenly, the Flames snapped out of their lethargy. They scored four goals in eight minutes and took a 4-3 lead before the middle of the last period.

With six minutes left in regulation, Ron Francis tied the score on a power play. A few minutes later, Cyr bounced the puck off Flames’ defenseman Roger Johansson’s skate into an open net to win it.

Just three weeks ago when the Flames were flying high, they smashed the Whalers, 8-2, at Calgary.

Montreal 7, Toronto 3--The surging Canadiens are closing in on first place in the Adams Division.

Shayne Corson and Stephan Lebeaud each scored twice at Montreal in an easy victory over slumping Toronto.

The Canadiens’ third victory in a row put them only one point behind division leader Boston.

Vancouver 6, Edmonton 5--The Canucks got third-period goals from Greg Adams and Trevor Linden to take a 6-4 lead en route to the victory.
