L.A. City College Pulls Away in Second Half to Beat Marymount

For a half, the Marymount College men’s team played perhaps its best basketball of the season. But L.A. City College pulled away in the second half to defeat the host Mariners, 99-74, Wednesday night in a Southern California Athletic Conference game.

Rebounding proved to be the downfall for the Mariners, who fell to 9-14 overall and 2-4 in SCAC play.

“They got us into the style of play they wanted,” Marymount Coach Jim Masterson said.

Marymount only had eight players in uniform.

Leading, 45-37, at halftime, the Cubs went on a 17-5 run to open the second half and took a 64-44 lead. They were never challenged after that.

City held a 50-24 edge in rebounding. The Cubs did not shoot particularly well, but usually got as many as three opportunities.

“I guess we don’t shot the ball very well.” City Coach Reggie Morris said. “We need more chances than other teams to get the ball in the hole.”

Despite missing its first nine shots, the Mariners trailed, 6-4, when they got their first basket with 13:44 left before halftime.

Marymount didn’t seem to have much trouble handling the Cubs’ full-court pressure defense early. The Mariners broke the press for several easy baskets.

Back-to back three-point baskets by Steve Elliot sparked the Mariners to an 8-0 run to tie the score at 26.

Julian Lawrence led the Mariners in the first half with 11 points and finished with 30.
