Richard Winchell Pleads Innocent to Fraud: Winchell, son of Vern Winchell, founder of Winchell’s Donut chain, pleaded innocent to charges that he defrauded investors in a muffin business of $46,000. Winchell, 48, of Hollywood, who is free on $25,000 bail, was arraigned before Municipal Court Judge Candace Beason on four felony counts of grand theft and violating business laws. Beason set a preliminary hearing for Feb. 28. Winchell had promised to set the investors up in the business but never did, Deputy Dist. Atty. Michael Delaney said. Winchell faces similar charges in an unrelated investment deal in Sacramento County, prosecutors said.
