One day after shooting a 63, Jack Nicklaus shot a 75 Saturday in the third round of the Doral Open at Miami.
That dropped him six strokes behind the new leader, Andy Bean, whose 67 Saturday gave him a 203 total and a one-stroke lead.
“The last six holes just killed me,” said Nicklaus, who played that stretch four over par. He had a 39 on the back nine.
Nicklaus was very much in contention until a long iron shot into the back bunker resulted in a bogey on the 14th.
He followed that with a double bogey on the next hole. His approach was over the green. He failed to reach the putting surface with his chip, chipped again and then two-putted.
Bean, 38, a three-time winner of this title, put himself in position to challenge for his first victory in five years with a round that included a 110-yard wedge shot for an eagle-three on the eighth hole.
Bean made up three shots on the last three holes against lefty Russ Cochran, who held a two-stroke lead as late as the 15th hole. But a bogey-bogey finish dropped him back into a tie for second with Rocco Mediate at 204. Both shot 68.
Deb Richard missed a number of opportunities but redeemed herself with a birdie on the second hole of sudden death and beat Cindy Rarick for the Women’s Kemper Open title at Wailea, Hawaii.
Richard hit a shot with her sand wedge to get within six feet of the hole, and then made her birdie putt to win. Rarick went over the green and had to chip from 30 feet.
Rarick had a two-stroke lead over Richard going into the final round. Richard had a one-under 70 and Rarick a 72 to force the playoff.
