Ups and Downs: What’s relentless, nerve-wrenching, and all wood? Answer: Magic Mountain’s new Psyclone, a replica of Coney Island’s famed and awesome wooden Cyclone roller coaster that begins operation Saturday. Magic Mountain’s new 24-passenger Psyclone train climbs up a 183-foot-long completely dark tunnel to the top of a 95-foot lift, then plunges down a 53-degree, pitched first drop into light. During the two-minute ride, passengers go up and over 10 more hills and around banked turns at speeds up to 50 m.p.h. Coney Island’s Cyclone cost about $100,000 in 1927. The new Psyclone carries a $5-million price tag.
