Chemical Pollutes S. Korean Water

SEOUL — Millions of people in South Korea’s southern provinces stopped using tap water Thursday after toxic chemicals were detected in their water supply, officials said.
Citizens in the southern port city of Pusan and nearby areas were alerted after officials found that phenol had been dumped into the Naktong River, which supplies drinking water to more than 10 million people in Pusan and two southern provinces. Phenol can cause cancer and damage the nervous system.
Authorities arrested six officials of Doosan Electro-Materials Co., a major phenolic laminate producer.
