Triton Swimmers in Second

UC San Diego’s men’s swimming team is a distant second to Kenyon (Ohio) after Thursday’s first round of the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in Atlanta.

The Tritons, led by Travis Miller’s second-place finish in the 200 individual medley, have 92 points to Kenyon’s 214 after the first of three days. UCSD’s Mark Fahlen took fourth in the 500 freestyle and the Tritons’ John Flowers was ninth in the 50 freestyle.

TENNIS

Nineteenth-ranked Miami (Fla.) defeated the University of San Diego, 5-1, in the first round of the Blue-Gray Classic in Montgomery, Ala. Miami’s Conny Falk, the NCAA’s second-ranked singles player, defeated 13th-ranked Jose Luis Noriega of USD, 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. Frederik Axsater, at No. 2 singles, provided the Toreros’ only victory when he defeated Miami’s Dean Cohen, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4. USD (8-10) plays Ball State this morning.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

The No. 16- and 17-ranked teams met in Provo, Utah, and proved the accuracy of the poll. No. 16 BYU defeated San Diego State, 6-3.

SDSU’s singles victories came from Dorey Brandt and Nicole Storto. Taunya Johnson and Sue Hawke was SDSU’s only winning tandem in doubles.

BYU improved to 13-2 and SDSU fell to 7-6.

USD lost only one singles match in defeating visiting Iowa, 8-1. USD, ranked No. 15 in the country, evened its record at 7-7. Singles victories came from Julie McKeon, Laura Richards, Karen Lauer, Margo Mullally and Laura Mannisto.
