Celtics’ Smith Charged

Boston Celtic guard Charles Smith pleaded not guilty to vehicular homicide and drunk driving charges after a hit-and-run accident that killed two Boston University students, one of them a 21-year-old woman from Placentia, Calif., near the Boston campus early Friday.
Smith, 23, who has a short-term contract with the Celtics, also was charged with leaving the scene of an accident. He was released on $100,000 personal recognizance after his arraignment in Roxbury District Court.
The victims were identified as An Trinh of Placentia and Michelle Dartley, 20, of Ridgewood, N.J.
Smith had a blood-alcohol level of .06, below that presumed to be a factor in an accident. In Massachusetts, a person is presumed to be driving drunk when the alcohol level reaches .10. When a blood-alcohol count falls between .06 and .10, drunkenness must be proved by additional evidence.
Smith played college basketball at Georgetown and was on the 1988 U.S. Olympic team.
