California IN BRIEF : MAMMOTH LAKES : Swarm of Quakes Rattles Community

A swarm of earthquakes, more than 20 of them stronger than magnitude 3.0, shook beneath the Long Valley caldera and rattled the town of Mammoth Lakes in the last week. The quakes began last Saturday and lasted several days, but did not suggest imminent volcanic activity, the U.S. Geological Survey said in Menlo Park. The area has been under observation since the early 1980s because of periodic swarms caused by volcanic magma moving beneath the surface.
