Easy Daley Victory Foreseen in Chicago

CHICAGO — Mayor Richard M. Daley appeared headed for easy reelection Tuesday in a contest that officials said was drawing the lowest voter turnout in the city’s history, about 44%.
Daley, 48, was elected two years ago to fill a partial term after the death of Harold Washington, the city’s first black mayor.
Daley was endorsed by the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Sun-Times and by the Chicago Defender, the city’s black-owned newspaper. He also was backed by two prominent blacks: Ron Brown, the Democratic National Committee chairman, and Virginia Gov. L. Douglas Wilder.
He faced independent Eugene Pincham, a black former judge, and Republican George Gottlieb, a little-known former police officer.
