John Akridge, the Metropolitan Washington Baseball president, had announced the “retirement” of the nickname Senators when the contest began March 12. He said at the time that Washington would be a new expansion city and the Senators are part of its past.

“I had a soft spot for the Nationals because it has a historical tie-in to a team in Washington,” Akridge said Monday. “One that didn’t leave.”
