HARRY CONNICK JR.
“Swinging Out Live”
***
SMV Enterprises ($19.98)
Most of this lively, 77-minute program features Connick, the 23-year-old jazz singer/pianist/composer, in a Dallas show that was part of his tour last year with a small orchestra. Connick is a lightweight compared to the greats of the genre, but he deserves credit for resurrecting a dead genre--the big-band jazz of the ‘30s and ‘40s. Just an ordinary pianist, Connick is an effective singer, crooning in the velvety, nonchalant style of a young Mel Torme. The highlights of this skillfully shot and edited program are swinging standards like “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” rather than Connick’s original tunes.
