Rooney Reigns Supreme: The Supreme Court on Monday let stand a decision that “60 Minutes” commentator Andy Rooney must not face a $16-million defamation suit for his on-air statements about Rain-X, a product that claims to dispel water from automobile windshields. The court, without comment, refused to review a decision of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals that Rooney’s statements about the product did not warrant a trial. The controversy began with theApril 17, 1988, broadcast of “60 Minutes,” when Rooney displayed a container of Rain-X during a feature on junk mail and said it didn’t work.
