Asner on ‘Trials’: The jury (CBS execs) is still out on whether “The Trials of Rosie O’Neill” will be picked up for another season, but if it is, look for Ed Asner to join the cast. “Rosie” producer Barney Rosenzweig says Asner would play “a right wing, bigoted, retired L.A. cop who becomes a private investigator for the public defender’s office.” That would put him in regular contact with Rosie, played by series star Sharon Gless. Asner is well-known to TV watchers as the irascible, blustery Lou Grant of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “Lou Grant.”
