COUNTYWIDE : Edison May Have to Cut Emissions 90%

Southern California Edison Co. would have to reduce its pollution-causing emissions by 90% under rule changes recommended by Ventura County’s Air Pollution Control District Advisory Committee.
The changes, which have been in the works for more than a year, were recommended Tuesday. The County Board of Supervisors will consider adopting them at a hearing June 4.
Ventura County exceeds both federal and state health standards for ozone pollution. Edison’s two power plants, Ormond Beach and the Mandalay Generating Stations, release about 18% of the county’s nitrogen oxide emissions, according to air pollution officials. Nitrogen oxide is a major component in the formation of ozone.
The rule change would cost Edison $243 million to retrofit its plants to cut the pollution.
