HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Kieling Wins 4 Events in Crespi Track Win
- Share via
Kieling was about the only familiar surname at Thursday’s track and field meet at Crespi High.
Ryan Kieling, a senior, is the last in a line of talented Kielings to pass through Crespi’s athletic doors.
Kieling won four events to help the Celts clinch the Mission League title with a 73-54 victory over Notre Dame. Crespi is 6-0.
Kieling, the defending Southern Section 2-A Division hurdles champion, won the 120-yard high hurdles (15.1 seconds) and the 330 intermediates (40.6) as well as the 100 meters (11.1) and 220 yards (23.1).
Ryan’s brothers Todd (1987) and Eric (1988), both former state-caliber runners in the 110-meter high hurdles and noteworthy high jumpers, aided Crespi in winning Del Rey League team titles over Notre Dame in those years.
Kieling, who was a freshman when Notre Dame and Crespi last met on the track in 1988, had been licking his chops while waiting for the Celts’ season finale.
“After a three-year layoff, this is everything,” Kieling said. “I’ve been waiting for this meet all year. I couldn’t sleep the last two nights. This was it .”
Jim Amato won the 880 in 2:04.9, mile (4:45.4) and two-mile (11:08.5) for Crespi. Notre Dame (5-1) won the 440 and mile relays in 45.7 and 3:38.1.
