A 78-year-old woman was killed and her daughter injured Friday in a collision between a car and a Santa Fe Railway freight train, a Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman said. The woman threw her pet dog out of the car to save its life only seconds before the mishap.
The accident between the small car and long train occurred about 4 p.m. at Duarte Road and Buena Vista Street in Duarte and clogged rush-hour traffic from the San Gabriel River Freeway to Buena Vista.
Authorities identified the dead woman as Bella Walters and the other victim as Cyd Wander, 60, of Playa del Rey.
