OJAI — Scott Hansen of Saddleback College beat teammate Esteban Saba to win the community college men’s singles title Sunday at the Ojai Tournament.
Saddleback and Santa Barbara finished in a first-place tie for the team title with 16 points. West Valley was second with 15.
Hansen won the match, 7-5, 7-6. He won the tiebreaker, 7-4. It was the second time Saddleback has had two players in the final. In 1984, Jim Stephens beat teammate David Saloman.
Hansen is Saddleback’s No. 1 singles player and was seeded third in the 110-player Ojai field. Saba, who is No. 2 at Saddleback, was the seventh-seeded player in the field.
“It was a neat feeling,” Saddleback Coach Bill Otta said. “You just sit in the stands and let the kids do their own thing.”
Saba had reached Sunday’s final with two upset victories Saturday. He beat No. 2 seeded Steve Arnott of Golden West, 6-3, 7-5, in the quarterfinals. He then beat fourth-seeded Jean Barnard Keen of Santa Monica, 7-5, 6-3.
