Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Inc.: The Orlando, Fla., publisher and insurer said its first-quarter loss deepened to $78.73 million from $71.97 million in the year-ago quarter. Revenue edged up to $280.27 million from $276.9 million. The company said two factors in the poorer showing were increased interest expenses and onetime costs associated with the consolidation of its college publishing operations.
