CITY SECTION SOFTBALL PLAYOFFS : Cavallero’s Grand Slam Lifts Birmingham to Win

Chrissy Cavallero hit a grand slam with two out in the bottom of the 11th inning Thursday, giving Birmingham High an 8-7 victory over Chatsworth in a first-round City Section 4-A Division softball playoff game at Birmingham.

Cavallero’s eighth home run allowed the Braves (12-6 overall) to overcome a three-run Chatsworth 11th. Birmingham, which led, 3-0, after four innings, overcame a 4-3 deficit with a run in the seventh to force extra innings.

Shannon Seranella was four for five and scored three runs for Birmingham. Cavallero finished with five runs batted in.

In other 4-A Division games:

Taft 3, San Pedro 1--Pitcher Julie Kawamoto’s single with two out in the fifth inning broke a 1-1 tie and sparked Taft to the victory.

Kawamoto (6-4) went the distance and April Tobin was two for two for Taft (7-4).

San Fernando 19, Van Nuys 6--Host San Fernando (10-7) had 11 hits in a 12-run fifth inning en route to a one-sided victory. San Fernando leadoff hitter Edna Salandez had four hits, five runs scored and four RBIs. Sally Ventura, who bats third in the lineup, had three hits, three runs and five RBIs. Cleanup hitter Bernie Samaniego had three hits, two runs and six RBIs.

3-A DIVISION

Venice 8, North Hollywood 3--Evelyn Calderon had two hits, including a double, for North Hollywood (6-8) in a game at Venice.
